Sedation dentistry, an increasingly popular method of receiving dental care, provides adult dental patients an anxiety-free, pain-free alternative to standard dental treatments. They may perform laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood counts, assist with dental care, prepare tissue samples, take blood samples, administer medication and more. Lifting, holding and restraining animals increase the risk of injury on the job.

Two-year and four-year veterinary technology programs in schools with American Veterinary Medical Association accreditation prepare students for a state exam for licensing.

2010-03-05 Mobile dental clinic to start service in Kalamazoo County next week

For the first time, children will be able to get cavities filled instead of just their teeth cleaned at school, said Bonnie Dykehouse, the county dental clinics program manager.

The mobile clinic will target undeserved children whose families cannot afford dental care.

In future years, the clinic could expand to visit other school districts besides Kalamazoo, Dykehouse said. It is starting with KPS because the health department already has a dental program set up to serve the districts children.

2010-02-26 Report: Access to dental care lags in N. D. , Minnesota Grand Forks Herald Grand Forks, North Dakota

N Medicaid programs could motivate more dentists to treat low-income children. Only 38 percent of Medicaid-eligible children received dental care in 2007, largely because too few dentists are willing to treat them, according to the Pew study.

In the midst of the array of complex health care issues confounding the nation, ensuring that children have access to dental care should be non-controversial, the reports authors state. Proven solutions exist and are relatively inexpensive.

North Dakota and Minnesota are among the two-thirds of the states failing to ensure that disadvantaged children get the dental health care they need, according to a new report from the Pew Center on the States.

Dr. Steve Erlandson, a Grand Forks dentist and president-elect of the North Dakota Dental Association, agreed that an access problem exists for disadvantaged children in the state, primarily because of low reimbursement rates.
