2007-06-22 American Dental Hygienists Association Highlights Major Initiatives At 84th Annual Session In New Orleans

The Standards can serve as a benchmark for practitioners in their day-to-day patient care activities. Additionally, the Standards can be used by a dental team to evaluate their comprehensive patient care activities, assess quality of care and identify areas needing improvement or change. As we continue to identify the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases, for example, these Standards will provide an outstanding resource for dental hygiene care. The document supports the comprehensive approach that dental hygienists take in caring for patients. The Standards assist in supporting the importance of dental hygienists as members of multidisciplinary teams due to the nature of the care that is provided by the profession.

2007-06-28 Alaskas news and information source Judge dismisses case against dental therapists

Stated simply, under the federal statutory scheme, federally certified DHATs are today performing dental procedures in rural Alaska in order to help accomplish the specific dental health care objectives identified by Congress. Under state law the DHATs could not lawfully perform such work and indeed would be subject to possible criminal prosecution for doing so. AS ; AS . State law thus clearly obstructs the execution of the purpose of federal law. Federal regulation of Indian health care is comprehensive and pervasive; requiring DHATs to obtain state dental licenses before providing certain dental procedures to Alaska Natives would frustrate the accomplishment of the federal objective and obstruct the execution of the IHCIAs purpose.

2007-06-23 AIDS Action Council Calls Senate Appropriations Committee Recommendations Inadequate to Meet Growing Epidemic

AIDS Action Council is also concerned that the AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETCs) and the Dental Reimbursement Program were the only Ryan White programs that did not see funding increases in either the Senate or House committees bill. AETCs are responsible for building and maintaining a well- educated health professional workforce, which is vital in light of growing caseloads. The dental program increases access to oral health care services for HIV-positive individuals who cannot afford routine dental care while providing education and clinical training for dental providers, especially those located in community based-settings. Both programs are critical to maintaining the health of those living with HIV.

2007-06-30 American Dental Association Comments on Court Ruling in Case Finding Federal Preemption of State Dental Practice Act

We are plainly disappointed with this ruling," said Dr. Kathleen Roth, ADA president. "Our only objective in this litigation has been to improve access to high-quality oral health care in remote areas of Alaska, to ensure that dental personnel providing this care are properly trained, and to maximize patient safety. Our pledge to the tribal community, both in Alaska and elsewhere in the United States, is that this judgment will not deter us from joining them in fighting for the public health resources that will ensure that Alaska Natives have access to the same dental care as all other Americans. As the Native American/Alaska Native community well knows, the ADA has a long history of advocating for Indian Health Service dental programs, and those efforts will continue. "

2007-06-28 Childrens Health Care Benefits

Separate SCHIP programs are less likely to cover dental services, services related to long-term care, prosthetics, and hearing aids and eyeglasses than the Medicaid program and Medicaid-expansion programs in SCHIP. Separate SCHIP programs may also impose benefit limits on any service they cover that could not be applied to children covered by Medicaid.

The American Academy of Pediatrics periodically updates its recommendations on the scope of childrens health care benefits. The AAP recommendations apply to all children, not merely low-income children, but they provide a starting point for considering coverage policy for children in public programs and private insurance. The AAP recommendations include medical care, critical care, pediatric surgical care, behavioral health services, specialized services for children with special needs, and pediatric oral health.

2007-06-14 WellPoint, Inc. at FTN Midwest 2007 Health Care Conference - Final

Finally, the uninsured is a major growth opportunity for us. There are 45 million Americans that are uninsured. This is something I think all of us can agree were going to hear about quite a bit over the next couple of years. But I really want to break this group down into three core buckets. The first bucket is roughly 25 pct. and you will see thats the green bucket. The important thing about this bucket is, these are individuals that currently qualify -- they qualify to have Medicaid programs available to them and they can get healthcare; they simply have not enrolled. So when you hear the 45 million, its important to put in perspective that 25 pct. can have coverage. They just havent enrolled. Now, they get enrolled when they have an episodic event. They go to the hospital and generally at that point in time, they actually get
