2007-01-31 Book Review-The Ghost Map BlogHer

I grew up in both the country and on the edge of a small town. We had well water and a septic tank. City water and massive sewer systems would not be something that entered my life until I left for university. To be honest, it was rarely thought of other than to figure out if the water coming from my tap tasted ok or if I needed to filter it. Now that I do live in a city I occasionally hear things that make me shake my head due to the sheer magnitude of the implications. Listening to the radio the other week I heard that there were serious sewage blockage issues due to the fact that some people flush their dental floss which require parts of the system to be cleared every week as wads the size of softballs accumulated. Its not something Ive ever thought of doing and Im sure the people who do it never give it a second thought

The goal of Dental Day is to provide dental care to those in the community who do not have insurance, do not have the means to afford dental care and do not qualify for the medical card. Their income must also fall below the 200 percent poverty guidelines and individuals must be in need of urgent care from infected teeth.

All patients will receive a visual exam and an appointment for treatment at participating dental offices. There are more than 110 available appointments for fillings, extractions, cleanings and emergency care. Availability is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

2007-01-30 Pratt Tribune-News

The Pratt Health Foundation (PHF) is working with Pratt dentists to provide a dental screening program for Pratt elementary kids. This year the screening program will be offered on Friday, February 2nd. The effort was started three years ago when the Foundation received a grant from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund to initiate the program. Kansas statutes require an annual dental screening program for elementary students.

School officials have done a great job organizing the effort. In 2006, Pratt USD 382 managed to route 382 students through the screening process in approximately 80 minutes. A total of 656 kids were screened including students from Haskins, Southwest, and Skyline. The dentists discovered 193 students with cavities and 131 had dental challenges. Records were kept and parents were notified of the dental findings for their children.

Improve your dental hygiene: Brush with a fluoride toothpaste, floss, avoid sticky or sugary foods, use alcohol-free mouthwash and see your dentist regularly. Tooth decay and gum disease progress rapidly in people with dry mouth, Harms says, "and you dont want to give bacteria a stronghold in there. "

Prescribed and over-the-counter medicines, including antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers, high-blood-pressure medicines and antidepressants are the most common culprits, says dentist Kimberly Harms, consumer adviser for the American Dental Association. "But discontinuing them can create far worse problems than dry mouth," she says.

2007-01-30 Who needs a high-tech toothbrush

Trust me. I love technology. But I think maybe with a little dental floss and a good old-fashioned hand-powered toothbrush, we can all do just fine.

The company also offers up all sorts of dental studies about how efficient the toothbrush is compared with competing models.
