Im sure the technology exists to upgrade the voice synthesizer to make it even more attractive to a dental patient. What if celebrity voices could be made available All youd have to do is record people such as Christopher Walken, Nelson Mandela, Amy Winehouse or Sean Connery saying individual words. It would be easy with YouTube, and you could build up a substantial vocabulary with each celebrity. Imagine how great this would be: Youre sitting in a dentists chair, you go with the Sean Connery, and you could say, "Dammit. The weather is simply splendid this time of year. Reminds me of being a wee lad in Scotland, it does. "

2008-07-06 Dentist disciplined for breaching rules, then has license yanked over tax liability

The Board of Dentistry licenses dental professionals and enforces state laws and regulations governing dental care. When dentists get in trouble, the board metes out punishment in conjunction with the state attorney general.

Gwendolyn Timberlake, a St. Paul dentist, has been a focus of complaints and disciplinary action by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry since 2000. But until Timberlake became delinquent on her taxes, the state let her keep practicing dentistry.

In 2004, the board put conditions on Timberlakes license based on "substandard periodontal care, substandard prosthodontic care, unprofessional conduct (prosthodontic work that was billed for but not completed), as well as continuing concerns" about recordkeeping and infection control, according to Marshall Shragg, executive director of the Board of Dentistry.

2008-07-06 Dentistry, an industry in decay-Telegraph

But NHS dentistry is not funded to deal with complex procedures, and complex procedures were what my mouth had needed for years. I was promised by my new dentist an American smile, a row of gleaming white, even "Hollywood teeth" with no spaces. I had just spent and pound;1,200 on several months of periodontal work to get rid of a gum disease so severe it had left the roots of my front teeth exposed. While and pound;6,000 seemed a huge sum, I had it to spare then, and could not guarantee when I might have it again. My teeth were to be drilled down to tiny stumps and replaced by crowns. The spaces would be filled by a continuous bridge which would follow the whole line of my lower jaw, incorporating the crowns. I paid a and pound;2,000 deposit and went in to be dentally reborn.

2008-07-05 How effective are dental referrals by primary care physicians

The investigators report their results today during the 86th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research. Of the 24,403 children in the study, about 5 pct. had tooth decay, 2. 8 pct. were referred to a dentist, and 3. 5 pct. made a dental visit before 42 months of age. Among children with tooth decay, 32 pct. were referred, and a higher percentage of children with a referral visited a dentist (35. 6 pct. ) than those not referred (12. 0 pct. ). Several factors were associated with whether a child received a referral to a dentist besides the presence of any decayed teeth, including increasing age of child, the availability of a general dentist in the county where the child received IMB services, and whether the child was seen in a practice located in a rural area.

Young children from low-income families experience high levels of tooth decay and face many barriers to getting dental treatment and preventive services. Because these children usually visit their pediatrician or other primary care provider far more frequently than a dentist, the primary care medical setting is gaining popularity as a place to provide preventive dental services.
