The event was the third annual Give Kids A Smile program started in 2002 by the District Dental Societies in Detroit, Oakland and Macomb counties through the American Dental Association. Give Kids A Smile events were held across the state Friday and today. Many of the children who participated were from low-income families and had never been to a dentist before, volunteers said.

Spencer was among the more than 250 youths from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties who received free dental care today at the University of Detroit Mercy dental clinic. Area dentists, their staff and university dental students donated their time.

West Auckland dentist Andy Moon suffered smoke inhalation and another man has burns after the fire at Moons practice, Dentist Toothcare West in Henderson about 12. 20pm yesterday.

Ed Johnston, a lawyer whose practice is next door to Moons surgery, said the dentist was "lovely". He had been a client of Moons, and vice versa, for several years.

Harveys Real Estate receptionist Joshua Fernandes said at first he thought the smoke was coming from a restaurant below the dentists surgery.

For most San Mateo County children, visits to the dentist every six months are second nature. But for low-income, unin-sured families in the county, preventive dental care can be hard to come by. Some may get to see a dentist sporadically and others might never at all, increasing their likelihood for problems such as tooth decay and worse.

Five siblings and about 100 other qualifying children in the county were treated Friday by about two dozen dentists to free dental exams and procedures as well as education 1 thanks to the countys annual Give Kids a Smile Day.
