My opinion is that its not that parents are brushing their kids teeth poorly. The problem is our diet is terrible," said Victorias Dr. Ken Wiedenfeld, a longtime pediatric dentist. "The frequency of sugar is the factor. "

It notes tooth decay in preschool children, age 2 to 5, had been decreasing for 40 years. But consumption of juices, crackers, granola bars, soda and other sugary foods have reversed that trend, local dentists said.

Funding for the mission trip was provided by Bible Center Church. Supplies and medicines were donated by local dentists, Charleston Area Medical Center, Asthma and Allergy Center, and the St. Francis Hospital pharmacy. Rite Aid in Kanawha City provided pediatric medicine, and Boll Medical provided equipment at cost.

Dr. Robin Darnell, a local pediatrician, said the mission experience was sometimes overwhelming because the group worked long, exhausting hours. Poverty-stricken families suffer from malnutrition that leads to anemia, poor dental health, and numerous other health issues.

2007-05-01 Families who cant afford dental care have options

Parents can keep their kids teeth healthy by brushing and flossing their teeth, serving healthy snacks, bringing them to the dentist, encouraging them to wear a mouth guard for contact sports, and using a flouride toothpaste.

Children covered under Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program are not eligible for the program because the provincial government pays for basic dental care for those on social assistance.

Public health dental hygienists can provide professional dental cleaning, flouride application, individual toothbrush instruction and pit and fissure sealants free-of-charge at the health unit.

We have reasons not to be aggressive," said Matthew Messina, a dentist in Fairview Park and the consumer adviser for the American Dental Association. "We just dont have the research to say it is safe. "

Professional-strength strips that dentists sell for usd. 60 to usd. 70 represent another alternative: Worn twice a day for up to 30 minutes for two weeks, they are considered two to three times stronger than their over-the-counter counterparts, Hilliard dentist Carole Kelley said.

The State Dental Society states that the Medicaid program appears to have begun to take adequate steps to improve reimbursement rates for preventive services. But, it says, until Medicaid reimbursement is raised to a minimum level for all dental procedures to at least cover the cost of providing care, there will not be a significant increase in dentists enrolling in the program.

The dental access has greatly improved because of the clinic," said Julie Shepard, director of health promotion at the Adams County Health Department. "We worked with dental professionals about how to address the issue, and the most logical way was to open a clinic devoted full time to serve that population. We have ongoing support of local dentists to make sure that stays open. "

Inadequate dental care may also play a role. Cavities in young children can form very quickly, and parents should begin bringing their children to the dentist at age 1, said Dr. Joel Berg, chairman of the University of Washingtons Department of Pediatric Dentistry.

The study also noted a drop in the proportion of non-elderly adults who have visited a dentist in the past year a possible indicator of declining dental insurance.

That may be at least partly due to the growing prevalence of dental sealants, a plastic coating applied to teeth that protects against decay. About 38 percent of children and teens ages 12 to 19 had dental sealants in the most recent set of surveys.
