2007-02-01 Empire Information Services: News Story

The ADA recommends that children see a dentist no later than their first birthday, yet only three out of five children have seen a dentist before kindergarten. By then, over half (52 percent) of 6-8 year olds have tooth decay, according to the Healthy People 2000 oral health report. Pain from untreated dental disease makes it difficult for children to eat, sleep and pay attention in school, and it negatively affects their self-esteem.

We applaud the volunteers and corporate sponsors who give so much back to their communities on this day," said Dr. Steven Gounardes, a Brooklyn dentist and president of the New York State Dental Association. "One day of care is not the solution though, and our goal on February 2 will be to make a statement to parents, government decision-makers and to health professionals so that they become more aware of the epidemic of untreated oral disease among underserved children in their communities. 2007-02-01 Longtime dream realized

When Crystal Dickerson was a sixth grader at Marvin Elementary in Mulberry, she knew she wanted to be a pediatric dentist. Going to see her pediatric dentist Dr. James Lee in Fort Smith was not something she dreaded. Instead, she enjoyed positive experiences at the dentist and wanted to pursue that for other youngsters.

Now 29 and married to a medical school graduate in his residency, the only scary part of being a pediatric dentist was starting her own office in Wichita, Kan. , last fall.

2007-01-31 Grills" bill raises hygiene questions about trendy tooth ware

He says some places take dental impressions under less-than-sanitary conditions. "Places not forced by state of Tennessee and proper authorities to maintain clean tools and utensils, that can use same molding material on another person they used previously on someone before," he said.

Thats why Deberry proposed the "Grills bill. " He wants to outlaw anyone but dentists from taking impressions for someone getting grills.

As for Billy Wimbley, after we told him about Deberrys concerns, he said the next time he gets new grills, hes "going to a dentist, right away to do it. Better to be safe than sorry. "

2007-01-30 Clovis News Journal: Serving Eastern New Mexico and West Texas

Half of the dozen or so dentists who practice in Clovis are nearing retirement, according to Clovis dentists. Without young dentists to replace them, finding dental care in Clovis could become difficult.

Demand for dentists in Clovis has kept octogenarian Dr. O. T. Rozzell from setting aside his white gloves, his drills and his needles. The 80-year-old dentist still provides oral care to impoverished children with a mobile dentistry team.

The dental profession struggles to recruit young professionals to rural communities, said Dr. Kennedy Merritt, a 59-year-old Clovis dentist.

Some women have dental problems during pregnancy. Hormonal changes can make gums sore, swollen and bleed, according to the department of public health. The problems can be prevented by brushing and flossing daily. Having teeth cleaned early in the pregnancy also can help prevent gum problems.

Some women develop a "pregnancy tumor" on their gums. The painless bump on the gums can be pink, red or purple. It usually will not cause any problems, but care should be taken to keep the area around the tumor clean, and a dentist should be consulted.
