Project Dental Care is a program set up to provide emergency dentistry care for those who cant afford dental insurance, said Dr. David Parker, coordinator of the program. The service is provided through the Charlotte County Health Department in conjunction with the Charlotte Technical Center.

At least 30 area dentists, who are members of the Florida Dental Association, volunteer their time, Parker said.

Jeanne Wyman, nursing director of the Charlotte County Health Department said, a dentistry care program is "extremely valuable" in Charlotte County since the health department doesnt provide dental services for low income residents.

In 1990, Sherwin Shinn, a Sammamish-area dentist, had just finished trekking to the Mount Everest base camp in Nepal when he chanced upon a 5-year-old Nepalese girl with two severely abscessed teeth so infected he realized she might die. He operated at the nearby hospital so short of equipment he had to use his pocketknife.
