2008-10-24 Brothers do battle when Rams, Aztecs take field The Coloradoan,

They battled each other at home and in the house often enough," said their father, Ted, a dentist and assistant football coach at Monarch High School in Louisville. "Theyve always been very competitive, but at the same time, they always took great interest in each others competitions in sports. "

During the game, its very fun to watch," said Ted, who played college football at Northern Arizona. "You can cheer for everything, because youre rooting for both teams, and were so proud during the game seeing them out there on the field. The hardest part is after the game we have to deal with one on a team that has lost. Thats probably the most difficult part of it. "

2008-10-17 The Way it Was: Recalling when feet were best method of transport

A former area resident now living in Arizona is looking for information about an accident that happened about 30 to 40 years ago. She is doing some research about children involved in accidents and she remembers being a student on a school bus transporting school kids to Raymond School in Maple Heights. One little girl was running late and almost missed the bus. She managed to get one hand and one foot on the bus when the door closed and the bus dragged her along as the driver started up, not knowing he was dragging the little girl on the outside of the bus.

Because of these pressures, Medicaid cuts a lot of corners. Many hospitals and individual providers turn away or discourage Medicaid patients because the program pays below-market rates. My own familys most recent dilemma was to find a dentist willing to take Medicaid and who is willing and able to serve my cognitively disabled brother-in-law Vincent. The last guy lazily prescribed prophylactic antibiotics and barely attempted to clean Vincents teeth. (In case youre wondering, Vincent is a wonderfully compliant patient. He even thanks the phlebotomist. ) Because Vincent is dually-eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, he is a desirable inpatient at our fancy academic medical center. Too bad he is unwelcome at the hospital pharmacy, which does not take Medicaid.

2008-10-11 Tension between parents difficult for children

Dear Arizona: Dont make assumptions about his dental hygiene. He may have a phobia that prevents him from taking proper care of his teeth. Or he may have a medical condition. You may as well ask him about it because otherwise, you will stop seeing him and he will never know why. Please dont tell him how it makes you feel. Simply ask if he has spoken to his dentist about the discolourations and see what he says.

2008-10-07 Its never too early to start taking care of babys mouth, teeth

Take your baby to a dentist for a preventive checkup no later than his or her first birthday. After that, visits should be once every six months.

Katie Flanders didnt take her oldest daughter to the dentist before she turned 3, but her younger daughter, 14-month-old McKenna, went for the first time Wednesday.

At Wednesdays visit, Hishaw counted 12 teeth in McKennas little mouth. The dentist also cleaned her teeth and checked on spacing.

Check your babys teeth once a month for white or dark spots. If spots appear, see a dentist.

Routine dental care for toddlers and babies focuses on establishing a good relationship between the dentist and young patient. At Jennings office, kid-friendly amenities like colorful exam rooms and bubble gum-flavored gloves worn by the care providers are designed to put children at ease and alleviate their fear of the dentist, he said.

Increasing the rates in which parents take their infants and toddlers to the dentist involves cooperation between pediatricians, child care providers and dentists, and Jennings said that in Casa Grande, that cooperation is good.

Alan Weisman, with whom I teach journalism at the University of Arizona, wrote in this space a few months ago about why we need more skilled foreign correspondents.

Mort Rosenblum is a journalism professor at the University of Arizona. He worked as a foreign correspondent for 40 years.

Soon after JFK was shot, as Vietnam got ugly, I dropped my University of Arizona journalism classes to be inaugurated as president of Venezuela.
