2010-03-13 Take away privileges when kids wont brush teethBeing a dental assistant for 13 years, in addition to having a very messy non-clean 10-year-old son, has taught me that arguing about dental hygiene is a total lost cause. Instead, I have had to get really tough on denial of certain things he enjoys. I take away certain notable favorite things he likes to do. For example, if he does not brush, at least in the morning, the following day, he does not have privileges for the computer, phone, or TV for a full 48 hours. That is two whole days. 2010-03-09 PointOfLaw Forum: Georgia Tort Reform CasesThe plaintiff (Deen) had sought treatment from a dentist for swollen gums resulting from periodontal disease. The dentist performed a "debridement" procedure in which calculus was removed from underneath the plaintiffs gums. A debridement procedure causes a large quantity of bacteria to be released into the bloodstream and can be dangerous for patients prone to infections and other complications. The plaintiff claimed that various elements of his medical history should have alerted the dentist to these factors or that the dentist should have taken other steps to prevent the infection. The plaintiff claimed that the debridement caused an infection in his brain as a result of which he suffered a stroke and long-term mental and physical incapacitation. In 2005 the Georgia legislature passed a sweeping tort reform bill (S. B. 3) which enacted a number of measures intended to reduce the incidence of meritless litigation and to decrease the cost of litigation. The 2005 bill included caps on non-economic damages, increased standards of proof for
2010-03-08 Barton: And the envelopes, please. The professional organization that determines whether lawyers can practice in Georgia has resembled Charlie Chaplin ever since local attorney Benjamin Eichholz pleaded guilty in federal court in December to obstruction charges. Either the bar doesnt mean business or its waiting on actor Robert Vaughn to personally bring the case file to Atlanta. Getting beaned by a globe of flying pig flesh at an Atlanta charity event had to sting. Yet the Queen of Tarts gamely shook it off like laundry lint and cracked a joke. Unoinkingbelievable. 2010-03-02 U. S. Rep. John Linder to retireIn the decade since, Linder, a former dentist and small businessman, has used his position on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee to advocate for a consumption-based tax, the FairTax, that is popular with many grass-roots conservatives but has gotten little traction in Congress. The 18-year congressman represents a heavily Republican seat in the sprawling suburbs east of Atlanta that is very likely to stay in GOP hands.
2010-03-01 The Walton TribuneLinders decision creates a vacancy in what is believed to be a safe Republican district. Tom Kirby, of Loganville, recently announced his bid to challenge Linder. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz is a possible candidate, along with state Sen. Don Balfour (R-Snellville), state Rep. Clay Cox (R-Lilburn), Gwinnett Republican chairman Chuck Efstration, state Rep. Tom Rice (R-Norcross) and state Sen. David Shafer (R-Duluth). Linder, 67, of Duluth, served seven terms in the state General Assembly before his election to Congress in 1992. A dentist and U. S. Air Force veteran, Linder has gained national attention as sponsor of the FairTax plan to abolish federal income and other taxes in favor of a national sales tax.
2010-02-28 John Linder to retire - Jonathan MartinHe will not be mised. He was one of those rich guys who had no clue what toll the Republicans have taken on the middle class. He kissed Newt Gingrichs behind for years and lost his power after the evil one was forced from the speakership. I live in the Atlanta area, just outside his district, his tax ideas would bankrupt the country. Republicans spend plenty, but dont want to pay for it. They almost bankrupted the country with Bushs tax cuts, prescription drug benefits, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. None of these was funded, just put on the nations credit card. Potential candidates for his seat include former Christian Coalition Director Ralph Reed. - John Linder Newt Gingrich Jonathan Martin
