Downtown Los Angeles looked like a distant set of building blocks; the Hollywood sign a chalk smudge on the Hollywood Hills; and the long expanse of sandy shoreline like a thick rubber band stretched to the limit around sprawling Los Angeles county. At night, Los Angeles basin lit up for us a shimmering Persian carpet threaded with red and white freeway beams. Forsaking this spectacular view broke my heart.
