The lively surf contest featured riders representing Hurley, Reef, Transworld Surf, Surfing Magazine, Surfer Magazine, , Macbeth, Jedidiah, AKA, Anon Optics, Surf Ride, Jet Pilot, Dental Specialty Associates, Chase Paymentech, San Dieguito Academy, and Switchfoot with surf legend Tom Curren. The final heat took place between Reef and Surf Ride, and Reef was crowed the winning team. Riders Jeremy Sherwin, Zach Keenan, Teddy Navarro, and Sean Marceron were awarded trophy INT surfboards onstage before Switchfoots performance for their win.

Bob Davies is arguably the Dean of the dozen dentists who practice in the Bear Valley. He initiated the Rotary Clubs Dental Check-Up Program which is now in its 8th year and has provided dental exams to approximately 600 3rd and 5th graders in all three elementary school. For a distressingly large number of the children involved, it is the first time they have ever had such an exam. Many of the worst cases benefit from subsequent pro bono services by the participating dentists. Bob has had a total of 45 years of perfect attendance at Rotary. In addition to the Dental program, he organizes the liquid refreshment wagon for the July 4th fireworks, and for many years has been active in the Rotary Santa program.

The first celebration was a great success so the BENICIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM and the BENICIA/TULA SISTER CITY ASSOCIATION will once again host this event to celebrate Benicias Birthday. The evening will include informational displays by both organizations, a historical re-enactment, dinner, dancing, auctions and door prizes. On hand will be a replica of the "Atlantes" statues that held up the roof on the Toltec Pyramid in Tula. The Toltec civilization is older than that of the Aztec and many civilizations considered forerunners to the modern world including classic Greece. Second- and third-grade students attended a presentation given by dental hygienists from the Des Moines Health Center. The students learned about proper brushing and flossing techniques as well as how diet and nutrition contribute to dental health. All students were given screening tests and letters were sent home informing the parents of the screening results. The hygienists will return to put sealants on those students who returned their permission slips.

English and speech teacher Sarah Hamiltons speech and fundamentals of speech classes are beginning their demonstration presentations this week. Students will be showcasing their talents both inside and outside the classroom as they teach their peers "how to" do, create or repair some item or process. Presentations this semester include "how to" plant a flower, change oil, manage your schedule, make a jet pack and change a diaper.
