Studies from the American Dental Association found that nine out of 208 patients from the school of dentistry, who took osteoporosis drugs for any length of time, developed osteonecrosis of the jaw. "Weve been told that the risk with oral bisphosphonates is negligible, but four percent is not negligible," says Dr. Sedghizadeh.

Women should be cautioned about the risk of jaw infection, or osteonecrosis, when taking osteoporosis drugs, even for short-periods of time. If you take Fosamax, or other drug for osteoporosis, make certain you tell your dentist before undergoing any dental procedure.

Tooth decay could also affect even babies due to excessive bottle or breast feeding. According to Dr. Felicity Hardwick, President of the BC Society of Pediatric Dentists, this situation could arise because liquids pool in the mouth of the babies who are fed while they are asleep. Since there is insufficient saliva to wash the mouths of the babies, it leads to acid attacks. This has a negative effect on the teeth which are still embedded in the gums and are on the verge of eruption.

Dr. Le and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry say your child should visit a pediatric dentist within six months after the eruption of the first tooth or by age 1. Most parents arent following this advice since only 1. 5 percent of infants and 1-year-olds go to the dentist, compared to the nearly 90 percent who see a physician. "Many parents assume they dont need to care for baby teeth because theyll be replaced by adult teeth, yet untreated tooth decay can have serious implications for a childs long-term development and well-being," Dr. Le says. "For example, an untreated infected tooth will destroy the surrounding bone underneath. And it will eventually destroy the developing adult tooth under the bone. "

Mind you I am an Accountant who has a dentist as a Client and she has just stopped doing NHS work and its not difficult to see why. An NHS dental checkup is valued at 11. A dentist can do five such checkups in an hour so that is 55 per hour yet it costs the dentist 109 per hour to operate her surgery out of her own pocket (The NHS does not pay for the running costs of the surgery). Other treatments are remunerated at far too low for the dentists to make a living on purely NHS work which is why most if not all NHS dentists have extensive private practices which subsidise the NHS work.
