Why is it a good idea for your child to have an eye health and vision exam on a regular basis and particularly before beginning kindergarten You may believe your child has good vision -- sees airplanes in the distance, does not squint when watching TV, no headaches and does not complain and ndash; but vision problems can be present without any remarkable signs or symptoms. These problems, which children can be born with or show up within the first few years of life, can affect both the health and function of your young child and rsquo;s eyes as well as prevent them from having efficient visual skills. While most parents do a great job at taking their children to the dentist, it is not teeth that help you to learn, give you proper depth perception and allow good eye/hand coordination and gross motor skills -- it is the eyes.

According to Jonathan D. Shenkin, a pediatric dentist in Augusta, Maine, that age is two. Beyond that, he says, children who regularly suck a pacifier run the risk of developing dental issues, speech problems and even middle ear infections.

I dont really think pacis are a big deal. All kids grow up and out of them eventually, and I dont think a long-term paci addiction means that things are bad at home. Some kids treat blankies or those little stuffed animal blanket head thingies like pacis, and I had a roommate in college who still had her blankie. Why isnt anyone analyzing those Is it because pacis are in the kids mouths I can understand the dental problem thingkids needing braces, blah blah blah, but these days in our perfect-looking-seeking society Dentists and orthodontists think every single kid needs braces. I say give em the pacis. Itll keep them quiet at least.

Is IV Sedation Dentistry, Intravenous Sedation, Safe Dental Health Magazine

The fact is that IV sedation has been successfully used on millions of patients over the past 30 years. The statistics associated with IV sedation dentistry have determined that it is actually safer than local anesthetic, and because the sedatives are administered by a dental professional who has had special training, the patient should have absolutely nothing to be concerned about.

Therefore when it comes to visiting the dentist in order to maintain healthy gums and teeth, there is really no excuse not to. The best thing a person can do is to talk to a dentist that specializes in IV sedation dentistry and determine if this option is acceptable to them. After all, a healthy smile is worth it and IV dentistry makes it even easier to maintain.

There are other reasons to break the binky habit sooner rather than later. Pacifier use in the toddler and preschool years can lead to dental issues, speech problems, and middle ear infections, not to mention becoming the dreaded binky addict. Children should not be walking around with a pacifier at age 2, says Jonathan D. Shenkin, a pediatric dentist in Augusta, Maine.

In 2008, after her pediatrician in Encino, Calif. , instructed her to banish her daughters binky. Burnett sought a positive, tear-free way of doing so. "Its obvious that children have an addiction, but whats not obvious is that parents share in this addiction," she says.

The recession has exacerbated the problem. Dr. Lindsay Robinson, a pediatric dentist in Grass Valley, Calif. , says her patient roster has dropped off significantly in the past two years. Due to the economy, Ive seen a decrease in demand. Thats not to say that children dont need the care, but in general, people are being extremely conservative right now as far as any kind of out-of-pocket, or perceived out-of-pocket. One of her recent patients, a five-year-old boy, was diagnosed with a small cavity but didnt return to have the problem addressed until a year and a half had passed. He was in so much pain that Dr. Robinson had to extract the tooth. We had to put in a space maintainer, which is about triple the cost, she says. Its this whole idea of preventing the need for costly care down the road.
