When the United States took over, the Catholic Church sent Joseph Alemany, a Spaniard, to be bishop of California. He made the Monterey chapel his cathedral in 1849, but soon moved to Old St. Marys in San Francisco. Not long afterward, another bishop came to Monterey, but he moved the cathedral to Santa Barbara, to be closer to Los Angeles.

In the 1920s and later, a new interest in the California missions and in mission architecture blossomed in California. It was the era of Mission Revival architecture, when advocates restored the Mission-era buildings to their original Spanish-Moorish exteriors and plain, whitewashed interiors.

Researchers for decades have repeatedly found a correlation between religiosity and higher self-control among students and adults, noting that students who spent more time in Sunday school did better at laboratory tests measuring their self-discipline and that devout people were more likely than others to wear seat belts, go to the dentist and take vitamins.

Religious lifestyles may contribute to self-control by providing people with clear standards for their behavior, by causing people to monitor their own behavior more closely, and by giving people the sense that God is watching their behavior, states one conclusion of the study, which will be published in the issue of Psychological Bulletin.

A trip to the dentist may have helped Ken Schneider prevent oral cancer. Schneider says, I saw what I thought was an unusual white spot or a lesion and I decided to have it examined further. 10 percent of Americans have these lesions which can turn into oral cancer. While most are not pre-cancerous. The "brush test" can help you be sure -- *without* any cutting. The dentist scrapes cells off the spot with a brush and sends them to a lab. Where theyre tested. for abnormal or pre-cancerous cells. Kens
