In his debut book, journalist Fuchs provides an underwhelming account of how a decades-old Kansas cold case came to be solved. In 1982, 25-year-old David Harmon was savagely bludgeoned to death while he slept in Olathe, Kans. His wife, Melinda, was unharmed and her flimsy account made her the prime suspect, along with family friend (and Melindas possible lover) Mark Mangelsdorf. Despite stories full of holes, the two were not charged, due in large part, Fuchs says, to the power of the towns growing Nazarene Church, in which Melindas father was highly placed. In 2001, the case was reopened and two Olathe detectives tracked down Melinda, happily married to an Ohio dentist, and Mark, a Harvard Business School graduate and former v-p at Pepsi. Sure, it may not sound earth-shattering to you, but to me it was a realization that turned my world upside down. Although Im 27 (and wicked mature, may I add), its been more than three years since my family and I have spent any real quality time together. I was in Texas, they were either living in Ohio or New Zealand and prior visits together were usually a whirlwind of activity involving the rest of my extended family.

NEW TREASURER: Dr. David Fulton Jr. of Wadsworth, a general dentist who practices in Waukegan, is the new treasurer of the Chicago Dental Society. Fulton earned his dental degree from Ohio State University School of Dentistry. The society, which was established in 1864, has more than 4,100 members in Lake, Cook and DuPage counties, making it the largest local society of the American Dental Association.

BOARD MEMBER: Kids Hope United recently named Scott Moeller of Lake Villa to its 16-member board of directors. Moeller serves as the director of quality operations for Cardinal Health Inc. Previously, he served as vice president of operations for CeloNova BioSciences Inc. and director of quality assurance for RITA Medical Systems Inc. Moeller earned a MBA in industrial management from the University of Dallas and a bachelor of science from Ohio State University.
