By the 1950s, Carter Street and the West Side were included in an urban renewal/slum clearance project led by various levels of government. I remember that my dentist, Dr. Bert Wills, relocated from St. Elmo to a new office on Carter Street.

The dentist and his wife are pictured along with their two sons (Bryan and Nate) and Daniel.

Captain William Seabrook, wealthiest of the cotton planters, owned 1,500 slaves on Edisto Island in South Carolina.
